THE SOUTH
Iceland's geological contrasts are evident in the South, with many active volcanos covered with ice-caps, including Europe's biggest glacier, Vatnajökull. South Iceland has many mighty glacier rivers, vast black sands, and breathtaking waterfalls; it is the most visited part of Iceland by tourists. Among the most famous sights are Gullfoss and Geysir on the Golden Circle, Þingvellir National Park, Seljalandsfoss, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón.
REYKJANES
The Reykjanes peninsula has a diversity of volcanic and geothermal activity. In recent years, frequent earthquakes and several lava eruptions have occurred near the fishing town Grindavík. Among the places to visit are many attractive old lighthouses along the coastline and the Reykjanes Unesco Global Geopark, where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates over the Bridge Between Continents.
THE NORTH
The North of Iceland has mountains, peninsulas, valleys, and countless rivers. Iceland's second-largest urban area, Akureyri, is in Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland. Akureyri has a charming downtown and is rich in culture and history. Lake Mývatn further north is a must-visit with its exceptional variety of waterbirds and rock formations. Nearby Mývatn are the magnificent Ásbyrgi Canyon and Dettifoss – the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
THE WESTFJORDS
The Westfjords are Iceland's most remote and least populated region, with many wonders of nature, such as the Dynjandi waterfall, Látrabjarg bird cliff, the golden beach of Rauðasandur and the Hornstrandir nature reserve in the far north. Iceland's Ring Road 2 takes you through mysterious mountains, valleys and jagged coastlines with beautiful towns and villages.
THE EAST
Wild animals are not a common sight when you drive around Iceland, but you might encounter the region's pride, a herd of wild reindeer near the roads in East Iceland. Imported from Scandinavia in the 18th century, approximately 6,000 of them roam wild today, only in the highlands of the East. Some exciting places to visit in the East are the beautiful towns in the fjords like Seyðisfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður, as well as Egilsstaðir, the region capital, and Hallormsstaðaskógur which is the biggest forest in Iceland.
THE WEST
West Iceland has a rich history and is the setting of several Icelandic sagas and the famous book Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. The region's stunning nature includes treasures such as Snæfellsjökull and Mount Kirkjufell, Iceland's most photographed mountain. Hraunfossar (Lava Falls) is a series of beautiful small waterfalls streaming out of a lava field in Borgarfjörður; Langjökull, Iceland's second largest glacier, is not far from there.
